As an industry analyst that covers every bit of things related to network connectivity, I believe a unique perspective—I expend a lot of time with enterprise networking companies as well as operators, service providers, and telecommunication infrastructure firms. Each makes a compelling argument for why their solutions are best suited for any given deployment. Lately, though, tier one wireless carriers in the United States believe been crowing that next generation 5G deployments will render Wi-Fi obsolete. It’s understandable, given the billions of dollars they are investing in both fixed and mobile 5G networks, but such predictions aren’t realistic. In this column, I will dive deeper into the underlying technologies behind both 5G and Wi-Fi and the efforts from some of the larger enterprise networking providers. I hope to define why I believe co-existence is a more probable long-term scenario.

Cisco Systems

Cisco Systems was front and focus at the latest Mobile World Congress (MWC19) event held eventual month in Barcelona. I spent time with executives at the prove and was impressed by the networking giant’s 5GNOW initiative. At a towering level, Cisco acknowledges the convergence of the enterprise and service provider markets (you can read more on this topic in my MWC19 article here). What I like about 5GNOW is that it is aimed at helping operators identify new services to monetize, reducing costs from an operations and capital expenditure perspective, and establishing improved security postures to safeguard subscribers. In their current LTE world, many operators worldwide believe been locked out by the Over-The-Top (OTT) apps such as streaming services and multi-use platforms like Tencent’s WeChat in China. Both AT&T and Verizon are on the record stating that their 5G investments are each north of $20B. That recur on investment won’t arrive solely on the heels of consumer unlimited data plans (which I call a “dumb pipe” approach). I believe SD-WAN is also a huge revenue opportunity for operators, and Cisco is well-positioned with a flexible offering. The portfolio spans from Meraki for “lean IT” organizations, to Viptela, which offers uphold for customization and is ideally suited for more tangled network topologies. Furthermore, Meraki integrates LTE in some of its tiny fork security and SD-WAN appliances for fail-over, and partners with operators globally.

HPE Aruba

Prior to MWC19, I had the opportunity to converse to one of HPE Aruba’s lead engineers, who has considerable suffer on both the enterprise networking and mobile broadband (MBB) sides of the fence, from both a certification and deployment perspective. My takeaway is that it comes down to three vectors: economics, propagation, and scale. From an economics perspective, today’s LTE and tomorrow’s 5G are inherently more expensive than Wi-Fi to integrate into devices. Furthermore, the licensed spectrum aspect of MBB typically equates to a monthly charge per device (although private LTE networks are gaining momentum and will likely grow with the OnGo/CBRS initiative). Second, propagation: today’s MBB has major challenges traveling through walls and objects vs Wi-Fi. At MWC19, I observed companies like Huawei attempting to resolve this challenge, but the exertion is quiet nascent. Lastly, when it comes to scale, Wi-Fi takes the cake—its footprint in organizations great and tiny is unrivaled. Aruba is among a handful of providers that believe launched devices certified by the new Wi-Fi 6 standard, which boasts improvements in latency and coverage. 

Extreme Networks

Extreme Networks has undergone a reinvention of sorts, starting with its 2017 acquisitions of key networking assets from Avaya, Zebra Technologies, and Brocade. These deals shored up its roadmap gaps in Wi-Fi, data center, and security. Despite the dominance of Cisco and Aruba, Extreme organize a niche in venue deployment and boasts significant presence in the NFL. Such deployments are also an excellent demonstration of how Wi-Fi and LTE complement each other. Following MWC19, I had an opportunity to converse to an Extreme executive on the hotly debated 5G vs Wi-Fi topic. Extreme also subscribes to the notion that both connectivity technologies will exist together into the foreseeable future. One of the company’s announcements at the prove was focused on 5G subscriber analytics and closed-loop automation tied to the ExtremeAnalytics, Network Packet Broker, and Workflow Composer applications. The company’s objective is to forecast potential impacts to network performance and deploy remediation to ensure the best connectivity suffer possible. Based on its multi-domain efforts, it’s quite evident that Extreme believes in the viability of both 5G and Wi-Fi.

Wrapping Up

5G and Wi-Fi aren’t in a grudge match; consume cases will drive a blend of both connectivity options. Mobile 5G is certainly a game changer with its ultra-low latency, and it will birth a new set of applications in manufacturing, healthcare, smart cities, automotive, and more. However, Wi-Fi will also continue to evolve, providing a highly scalable, cost-effective networking solution. Some might bicker that the companies in this article are embracing 5G to ensure their survival. I believe, though, that they each understand the convergence of local/wide area/wireless and mobile broadband networking. Furthermore, they understand the value of delivering a seamless suffer for their users. 5G and Wi-Fi are better together!

As customers digitize their business operations "it's imperative to start this transition" to the DNA architecture, says Rob Soderbery, Cisco senior vice president of Enterprise Products and Solutions.

The DNA services controlled and orchestrated by APIC-EM comprise Cisco Plug and Play automation software and light Quality-of-Service. Plug and Play is agent software on Cisco routers intended to remove the need for any staging for pre-configuration or truck roll-outs to remote locations to reduce deployment time and cost.

EasyQoS enables dynamic updating of network-wide QoS settings based on application policy so applications are appropriately prioritized.

Another DNA strand is the intellectual WAN Automation Services application. This software automates deployment and management of Cisco ISR and ASR routers that comprise its IWAN product portfolio. Cisco says IT departments can configure and deploy a fork office network, with application prioritization, path selection and caching, in 10 mouse clicks with IWAN Automation Services.

For virtualization, DNA includes Evolved IOS-XE and Enterprise NFV. Evolved IOS-XE is a network operating system optimized for programmability, controller-based automation and serviceability. It includes APIs for third party application development, software-defined management, application hosting, edge computing, and abstraction from the physical hardware to enable virtualization.

Included in the operating system is Enterprise NFV, a software stack that includes virtualized network functions for routing, firewall, WAN optimization and WLAN controller, and orchestration. It enables fork office service virtualization on a customized Cisco hardware platform – like an ISR fork router – a server or any x86 platform.

Evolved IOS-XE runs on Cisco leaven 3850/3650 switches and ASR 1000 and ISR 4000 routers, and will subsist expanded across the enterprise network portfolio, Cisco says.

Lastly, DNA includes a cloud service management application called CMX Cloud. CMX Cloud provides location and presence information from Cisco wireless infrastructure for insight into customer behavior that can subsist used for personalized engagement. It can also subsist used for Wi-Fi onboarding, Cisco says.

CMX Cloud provides a Meraki-like suffer for enterprise users of Cisco's wireless LAN products, Soderbery says. Meraki is a provider of cloud-based WLAN management Cisco acquired for $1.2 billion in 2012.

Customers can blend Meraki services with CMX Cloud through DNA's programmatic interfaces, Soderbery says.

APIC-EM, Plug and Play and light QoS are available now at no additional cost for customers with Cisco SmartNet Total trust or partner uphold services. intellectual WAN App is provided through Cisco ONE Foundation software and is also available now.

Enterprise NFV will subsist provided through the Cisco ONE WAN suite as an annual subscription. It is in controlled availability through the first half of the year.

Comparing Cisco and Oracle's businesses

Cisco is the world's largest maker of networking routers and switches. It also bundles security software and other enterprise applications with its hardware products.

Cisco generates most of its revenue from its infrastructure business, which sells routers, switches, and other wireless hardware. This unit generates slower growth, and faces competition from other major players like Huawei, Arista Networks, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Juniper Networks.

Most of Cisco's growth comes from its smaller applications and security businesses. These units, which Cisco often expands via acquisitions, usually generate double-digit sales growth to complement the single-digit growth of its infrastructure business. Bundling these software services with its hardware widens Cisco's moat against its competitors and allows it to cross-sell more services.

Oracle generates most of its revenue from on-premise database and business software products. These products generate very unhurried growth in a highly saturated market.

To restore its top-line growth, Oracle launched cloud-based services like the Fusion Cloud, which provides human capital management, customer relationship management, and enterprise management tools for great companies. Oracle's other growth engines comprise its Supply Chain and Manufacturing Cloud applications, as well as the cloud-based ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) platform it gained from its acquisition of NetSuite in 2016.

Many of Oracle's higher-margin cloud services are generating double-digit sales growth, but most of those gains are offset by the declines in its lower-margin legacy businesses. Moreover, Oracle's determination to desist reporting its public cloud services revenue separately eventual year makes it difficult for investors to gauge the company's turnaround efforts.

Which company is growing faster?

Cisco's sales growth accelerated throughout most of the past year as bandwidth-hungry enterprise campus customers placed higher orders for more infrastructure products.

That growing enterprise footprint, along with its acquisitions of companies like Duo Security and Broadsoft, enabled Cisco's applications and security businesses to generate robust growth. Here's how Cisco's business fared over the past four quarters:

Cisco repatriated $67 billion in overseas cash eventual year, and it spent most of that cash on buybacks, dividends, and acquisitions. It's sitting on $10 billion in cash, so it quiet has plenty of elbowroom to tighten up its valuation, reward income investors, and expand its higher-margin software portfolio. Analysts anticipate Cisco's revenue and earnings to rise 5% and 18%, respectively, this year -- which are robust growth rates for a stock that trades at 16 times forward earnings.

Oracle generates much slower growth than Cisco for two reasons. First, exact for its on-premise database software and hardware is sluggish. Second, the growth of its cloud services is decelerating, possibly due to tougher competition from Microsoft and Amazon, which are both expanding into the cloud-based database market.

Instead of deploying more cash on acquisitions or research and development to strengthen its cloud businesses, Oracle spent most of its cash on buybacks over the past year, which helped it squeeze out a streak of earnings beats with nearly flat sales growth:

Analysts anticipate Oracle's revenue to dip 1% this year as its earnings soar 9%, which is significantly lower than its forward P/E of 14. Oracle can withhold treading water by repurchasing its shares, but its revenue growth will remain under pressure unless it makes some bold divestments or acquisitions.

The clear winner: Cisco

Cisco's well-balanced business, higher growth rates, and lower dependence on buybacks compose it a better investment than Oracle. Cisco's stock is also cheaper relative to its earnings growth, and its forward bow of 2.7% is much higher than Oracle's 1.4% yield.
